Atrophic Vaginitis & Vaginal Dryness Due to Menopause

Condition Overview

This occurs when the vaginal and vulvar tissues become more thin, frail, and easily irritated. This is typically due to the natural decline in estrogen that occurs during menopause, but can also occur with prolonged use of hormonal birth control, and in the early postpartum phase. This can oftentimes lead to painful intercourse, and even small tears in the vulvar or vaginal wall following intercourse.

Atrophic vaginitis is typically treated with pelvic floor PT, and daily topical vulvar moisturizers.
