Pelvic Organ Prolapse or Worsening of Existing Prolapse
Condition Overview
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs begin to drop into the vagainal canal. This can occur in the anterior portion of the vaginal wall (cystocele/bladder), posterior wall (rectocele/bowel), or superior portion of the vaginal canal (uterine).
Prolapse often occurs over time from the following:
Possible Causes:
Chronic poor pressure management
Pelvic floor muscle weakness, tightness, or both
Hormonal changes (decreased estrogen) during menopause
Treatment for prolapse typically includes pelvic floor physical therapy, the use of supportive devices like a pessary, and surgery in severe cases that have not been helped with conservative treatment.
