Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Pelvic Pressure
Condition Overview
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs begin to drop into the vaginal canal. This can occur in the anterior portion of the vaginal wall (cystocele/bladder), posterior wall (rectocele/bowel), or superior portion of the vaginal canal (uterine).
Possible Causes
Prolapse often occurs over time from chronic poor pressure management; pelvic floor muscle weakness, tightness, or both; or hormonal changes (decreased estrogen) during menopause.
Treatment
Treatment for prolapse typically includes pelvic floor physical therapy, the use of supportive devices like a pessary, and surgery in severe cases that have not been helped with conservative treatment.
