Obstructive Defecation

Condition Overview

Obstructive defecation is a type of constipation in which a patient has difficulty passing stool normally.

Symptoms

  • Feeling of incomplete bowel movements

  • Increased straining

  • Passage of hard or small pieces of stool

  • Frequent need to use laxatives to empty the bowels

It can be the result of structural deformities such as rectocele or rectal prolapse or the inability to properly coordinate the pelvic floor muscles during bowel movements.
